Llevo más de 15 años dedicado a los estudios balcánicos. Esta ha sido mi pasión personal y profesional durante este tiempo. Comencé formalmente con la concesión de la beca de investigador de la AECID en la Facultad de Ciencias Políticas de la Universidad de Belgrado, donde finalicé mis primeros estudios del máster (íntegramente en serbio). Desde entonces, he compatibilizado mi formación académica con mi carrera profesional, siendo editor de la revista académica Balkania durante 8 números (2010-2017), primero con fondos de la Embajada de España en Belgrado y luego de Casa Mediterráneo. Mi objetivo principal fue mantener una publicación regular de nivel sobre la región en castellano (en algunos números traducida al serbio y al inglés).
Paralelamente, he ejercido la consultoría en todo el espacio posyugoslavo (Embajadas, consultoras, ONG, publicaciones…). He publicado regularmente en la página de análisis Esglobal desde 2015, aunque también he publicado en Esglobal, El País, El Diario, Revista Mercurio, Letras Libres, Claves de Razón Práctica, Tiempo de paz, El Confidencial o Política Exterior. He sido invitado a impartir conferencias (sociedad civil, reconciliación, ampliación de la UE y geopolítica) en la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Universidad Complutense, Universidad del País Vasco, Universidad de Barcelona, Universidad de Granada, Universidad de Alicante, Universidad Autónoma de Puebla y la Escuela Diplomática.
Actualmente, soy investigador asociado del Instituto Igadi. He sido invitado a reuniones científicas por el Real Instituto Elcano, la fundación Konrad Adenauer, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, y el Hybrid Coe para analizar la actualidad de la región. Soy fundador del curso de formación continua en red de la Universidad Complutense: “Nuevos escenarios en los Balcanes” y participé como profesor en «Geopolítica de los conflictos congelados», durante el que formé a decenas de estudiantes. En noviembre de 2021, en la Universitat de València, defendí la tesis “Las movilizaciones sociales en el espacio posyugoslavo: oportunidades políticas y estrategias contenciosas”.
También he publicado varios libros de ensayo sobre los Balcanes (bajo el nombre de Miguel Rodríguez Andreu y Miguel Roán): “Anatomía serbia” (basado en mi tesis de máster y traducido también al serbio), “Homofobia en los Balcanes” (análisis de la homofobia a nivel local), “Maratón balcánico” (libro de divulgación – 3 ediciones), “Balcanismos. Manifiesto contra los estereotipos” (basado en una conferencia impartida en la Universidad de Sofía – 2 ediciones) y “Belgrado brut” (un ensayo historiográfico sobre Belgrado).
He compaginado esta actividad con la traducción literaria (del serbio, croata, bosnio), que me han reportado formación antropológica y sociológica, muy presente en mis análisis y conferencias. También he venido ofreciendo servicio de guía por los Balcanes para grupos interesados en la historia y cultura local. También organizo cada año cursos de literatura y política en la Academia «La Central».
En la actualidad, soy director de Balcanismos: una plataforma dedicada a la divulgación, conocimiento y formación sobre los Balcanes.

I have been focusing on Balkan studies for more than 15 years. This has been my personal and professional passion during this time. I formally began with the granting of the AECID research scholarship at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Belgrade, where I finished my first master’s studies (entirely in Serbian). Since then, I have made my academic training compatible with my professional career, being editor of the academic journal Balkania for 8 issues (2010-2017), first with funds from the Spanish Embassy in Belgrade and then from Casa Mediterráneo. My main goal was to maintain a regular high-level publication on the region in Spanish (in some issues translated into Serbian and English).
At the same time, I have consulted throughout the post-Yugoslav space (embassies, consultants, NGOs, publications…). I have published regularly on the Esglobal analysis page since 2015, although I have also published in Esglobal, El País, El Diario, Mercurio Magazine, Letras Libres, Claves de Razón Práctica, Tiempo de paz or Política Exterior. I have been invited to give conferences (civil society, reconciliation, EU enlargement and geopolitics) at the Autonomous University of Madrid, Complutense University, University of the Basque Country, University of Barcelona, University of Granada, University of Alicante, Autonomous University of Puebla and the Diplomatic School.
Currently, I am a research associate at the Igadi Institute. I have been invited to scientific meetings by the Elcano Royal Institute, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, the Hybrid Coe and Prespa Institute to analyse current affairs in the region. I am the founder of the online course at the Complutense University: «New scenarios in the Balkans» and have participated as a lecturer to «Geopolitics of frozen conflicts», during which I taught dozens of students. In November 2021, at the University of Valencia, I defended the thesis «Social mobilizations in the post-Yugoslav space: political opportunities and contentious strategies».
I have also published several books of essays on the Balkans (under the name of Miguel Rodríguez Andreu and Miguel Roán): «Anatomía serbia» (based on my master’s dissertation and also translated into Serbian), «Homofobia en los Balcanes» (analysis of homophobia at the local level), “Maratón balcánico” (publication book – 3 editions), “Balcanismos. Manifiesto contra los estereotipos” (based on a lecture given at Sofia University – 2 editions) and “Belgrado brut” (a historiographical essay on Belgrade).
I have combined this activity with literary translation (from Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian), which has brought me anthropological and sociological training, very present in my analyses and conferences. Beside that, I have been offering a guide service in the Balkans for groups interested in local history and culture. I am teaching, as well, courses of literature and politics at the Academy «La Central».
Currently, I am the director of Balcanismos: a platform dedicated to dissemination, knowledge and training on the Balkans.
